The stadium was opened on August 25, 2003, in preparation for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, which were held in Manchester. After the Commonwealth Games, the stadium underwent significant modifications to convert it into a football-specific venue to host Manchester City matches.

The stadium's seating capacity has varied over the years due to different modifications. As of my last update in September 2021, the Etihad Stadium had a seating capacity of approximately 53,000 spectators.
